Wow - what a day! We have finally settled in for the night after a looooong 13 hr day in the car.
We left Guelph this morning around 8am. Reality still has not sunk in for us at this point, so our goodbyes were sad but very surreal. Tears didn't flow until we rounded the corner onto Arkell Road. After a gas fill-up and the last Tim Horton's trip, we hit the 401. By 11am we were lined up at the Michigan border to go through customs. Praise the Lord we had no trouble at all with our paperwork and we were asked hardly any questions. We waited in line, got our stamps on our passports and papers, and we were back on the road by 11:40!!
We covered alot of ground today - Ontario to Michigan to Indiana to Illinois - over 700 kms! Driving in the slow lane is not so bad, and as we passed two very serious accidents today, one with a flipped trailer AND SUV towing the trailer, we have hesitations about taking the trip slow!!
Our biggest struggle today was finding a place to spend the night. By 7pm we were in the Chicago area, but could not find somewhere to grab some free WiFi to try to book a hotel through Priceline. We decided to give up and book the next hotel we found, but first stopped for a Wendy's quick dinner. Wouldn't you know Wendy's has free Wi Fi! We were able to book a nice hotel in a safe area of Chicago called Matteson and we are FINALLY out of the car for the day! Mark was a superstar today and drove the entire 12 hrs no problem!
Some highlights from today:
- Seeing a Linamar Guelph, Ontario truck at the Michigan/Indiana border
- Stopping for gas at a Shell station and having 15 choices of coffee flavours, 4 flavoured creamers, syrups, and add your own whip cream topping for $1.09. Only in the U.S.A!
